Herbal Therapy
Chinese herbology is part of traditional Chinese Medicine practice.
Formulated Chinese herbs have been successfully used by half of the world's
population for more than 2,000 years. Unlike western medicine, drugs and western
herbs, they have been tested on the human population for as long as 2,000 years.
Each Chinese herb, free of chemicals and their side effects, is designed for a
particular ailment.
Is it safe for one to just go into a store and choose their own Chinese herbal
medicine? No.
Chinese herbology is based on the conditions the body is undergoing at a
particular time, and this may change dramatically in just one or two days. Is
the body hot, is the body cold, is it retaining fluid, is it dry? One should
have the proper knowledge to determine if an herb could help.
Only a person trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) techniques can do
the proper evaluation. The patient undergoes a thorough tongue and pulse
examination. The TCM practitioner looks for abnormalities in the state and flow
of energy throughout the body. It is only then that the TCM practitioner is able
to determine the appropriate Chinese herbal formulas needed to correct the
problem.
Is it dangerous for one to take the same herbs as someone else, even if symptoms
are alike? Yes, it is very dangerous.
Chinese herbs should be used with discretion. Your symptoms may be alike, but
the condition of your bodies may not. For example, you may feel hot, while the
other person feels cold. To understand this better, use this analogy from
nature. While water is good for parched land, doing it to a flooded area can
only cause damage. Fen-Fen/Ma Huang is such an example. It was indiscriminately
used for everyone, without regard for their body conditions. Hence while it
helped some, it made others sicker.
